Mark Till, The Lucrative Photographer

Mark Till's new book aims to change the way photographers view themselves and their businensses. Says Mark, "As photographers and studio owners, each of us face similar problems. We're concerned with how to generate an endless stream of profitable clients who won't ask, 'How much are your packages?' Worry over if we've earned enough money during the year to pay bills for the slow months. And pressure ourselves to get all of our work done so that we can spend time with family and friends."

These are some of the challenges Till takes on in The Lucrative Photgrapher: How to Become Indispensable to Your Clients, Maximize Your Profitability, and Regain Your Personal Life (CB Press).

The Lucrative Photographer is not an ordinary book on business and marketing. Mark states, "It's a beneficial read for anyone in the photography business, especially for those who were drawn into the profession as a hobby." In a chapter entitled "Mind, Body and Spirit," Till outlines practical steps designed to create a balance between the hectic work day schedule, family, friends, and self. "One of the biggest challenges photographers face is how to get everything done, be accessible to their clients and still have time for family. Being lucrative is not just about making money or creating great images. It's also about balance," notes Mark.

Till's business background includes nearly ten years in audit and risk management, as well as consulting small business owners in matters of insurance and investments. Till was surprised by the lack of available business data on the photography industry. "Most professions have industry data outlining professional standards for conducting a business," says Till. "Individuals wishing to pursue a career in their profession can use this data as a reference to measure their performance against the rest of the industry. This information is essential if you need to borrow money."

Till conducts an ongoing survey of photographers' business practices, results of which he shares in his book. Among the most compelling statistics are those relating to income and sales. According to survey results, the average photographer earned just $10.55 per hour as compared to $13.38 per hour for the average employee in the US.

Editor's note: Mark formed Mark Till Consulting in response to requests from fellow photographers requesting help in running their businesses. Mark is a frequent lecturer and also consults one-on-one with photographers. In addition to onsite lectures, seminars, and classes, Mark offers teleconference classes via telephone.
